ADP Grants - Yearn to Learn YK

ADP® Small Business Grant Contest Announces First Northwest Territories Winner for 2014

Grant will help fund, furnish new office space and hire staff for growing tutoring business

Toronto, February 27, 2014 - ADP Canada Co., a leading global provider of human capital management solutions, today announced that Yearn to Learn YK, a youth tutoring service based in Yellowknife, is the second winner of ADP Canada’s 2014 Small Business Grant Contest and the first winner from the Northwest Territories. The contest offers entrepreneurs the chance to win a $10,000 cash prize.

Owner and operator of Yearn to Learn, Kate Gilbert realized that many children’s needs are not met by the typical classroom structure. Driven by her passion for education and learning, as well as witnessing the learning challenges faced by people close to her, Kate left her career as a classroom teacher to explore the world of one-on-one tutoring. Yearn to Learn offers tutoring and specialized after-school programming to children and youth of all ages in Yellowknife.

Since opening in April 2013, Kate has expanded her in-home tutoring business from two to 16 clients, many of whom come to learn multiple times a week. However, with an increased number of clients and shrinking availability, Kate is now challenged with accommodating multiple lessons.

“Thanks to the ADP Small Business Grant, I will be able to move to an office space, furnish it, and hire another teacher to help me manage the increased demand,” said Kate. “With an additional teacher, I can continue accepting new students and dedicate additional time to helping my existing students excel.”

As part of the Small Business Grant Contest prize, Yearn to Learn will also have its payroll processing fees waived for one year.

“The late Henry Taub, one of ADP’s founders, believed that education opened doors to opportunity,” said Greg Secord, President, ADP Canada, Employer Services Division. “We’re pleased that the grant will allow Yearn to Learn to open more doors for youth in Yellowknife.”

Through its relationships with more than 425,000 small businesses across North America, ADP has unique insights into the challenges that confront entrepreneurs every day. ADP’s trusted small business solutions help reduce costs and compliance risks associated with complex rules and regulations, so owners can focus on growing their businesses.

The ADP Small Business Grant Contest is open to all Canadian business owners with 1-49 employees, and entries will be received until March 31, 2014.

Entrepreneurs can enter the contest by sharing their business story and describing what they would do with $10,000. They can then invite their customers, employees, friends and family to show their support by voting for their submission online.
