92 per cent of Canadians pass the buck: ADP Outsource It!

At home or in business, Canadians divesting duties to the experts.

Toronto, May 23, 2007 — When it comes to daily tasks and chores, over 90 per cent of Canadians are willing to pass the buck — literally, according to the ADP Outsource It! Index. And with one of the most commonly outsourced tasks — tax return preparation —behind us for another year, many Canadians will now hire others to tackle seasonal chores like gardening, along with the perennial outsourced task: housecleaning.

“Whether it’s at home or in business, outsourcing is now as much a part of the lives of Canadians as watching playoff hockey in May,” says Sheryl Boswell, Director of Communications, ADP Canada.  “Just as Canadians are outsourcing tasks in their personal life, smart businesses of all sizes are doing the same when it comes to services like payroll and employee record-keeping.”

Today, more than 50,000 Canadian businesses of all sizes outsource tasks like HR administration, payroll and benefits management to ADP Canada to save time and money, and stay focused on core competencies and business growth.

Summer hiring

While many organizations staff up with seasonal and temporary employees at this time of year, calculating and processing income tax deductions, vacation pay, benefits, T4s and records of employment for a rapidly expanded employee roster can be a nightmare.  As a result, many companies large and small that provide outsourced services to Canadians — from renovation companies to junk removal services — are turning to outsourcers themselves.

“By outsourcing their own employer services, including payroll and HR for part-time and seasonal workers, busy employers can focus on getting the job done and keeping customers happy,” added Boswell.   “From Bay Street to Main Street, more and more Canadian businesses want to focus on what’s important, and leave the rest to the experts at ADP.”

Why and Where We Pass the Buck

The most common reasons why Canadians hire someone to do a task are they do not enjoy doing it themselves (37 per cent admit to this), or they don’t know how to do it (36 per cent). One quarter (27 per cent) off-load a task to save time.

When Canadians were asked which of the tasks they already outsource they deem most valuable, the leading responses were:

  • Housecleaning — 29 per cent
  • Tax preparation —27 per cent
  • Gardening/Landscaping — seven per cent
  • Caring for elders — five per cent
  • Childcare — six per cent
