Canadians Conceal Purchases from Family Members: ADP Payday Poll
Canadians admit to keeping purchases a secret: clothes, electronics and…cars?
Toronto, September 10, 2007 — More than one in five Canadians hide certain purchases from family members, according to the fourth annual ADP Payday Poll. Among the 22 per cent who admit to covert spending, gender strongly determines what they conceal — women predominantly hide clothes (32 per cent) and beauty products and treatments (14 per cent); men are most likely to hide electronics (13 per cent). Surprisingly, six per cent of males who hide purchases listed “vehicles” as their secret spend, suggesting that some skeletons in the closet have four wheels.
Money isn’t everything
- Concealed purchases notwithstanding, Canadians also revealed a generous, caring side, with one quarter agreeing to take less money home from their paycheque for more time with family and an investment in the environment, according to the ADP Payday Poll
- Four in ten Canadians would be willing to take a 20 per cent pay cut if it meant they could spend 20 per cent more time with family; men (38 per cent) and women (42 per cent) are virtually equal in this respect. Just three in ten boomers would make such a trade-off, versus over half (53 per cent) of young adults ages 18-29
- Exactly half of all Canadians say they would consider donating 10 per cent of their paycheques if it meant a healthier and cleaner environment for their current or future grandchildren.
- The older a person gets, the less likely they would be to donate 10 per cent of their paycheques to ensure a cleaner environment for their grandchildren; just four in ten (43 per cent) Canadians ages 50 and above would make such a donation, versus 65 per cent of those 18-29.
“While many of us want more take home pay, according to the ADP Payday Poll, Canadians don’t always take it all home,” said Heather Nairn-Rand, Vice President, Marketing, ADP Canada. “Whether you spend it, hide it or give it away, if your paycheque comes from ADP, the one thing that’s certain is it’ll be on time, every time.”
Richer than our parents
- Six in 10 Canadians (58 per cent) say their current financial situation is better than that of their parents when their parents were the same age. Results vary by region and age:
- Seven in ten Albertans (69 per cent) and two thirds of Atlantic Canadians (66 per cent) believe they are richer than their parents were, but just 52 per cent of British Columbians say the same
- Canadians over the age of 50 are more likely (65 per cent) than younger Canadians (51 per cent) to believe they are achieving more wealth than their parents.
Canadians are split three ways on the future
Overall, Canadians are evenly split three ways on the financial future of the next generation:
- One third (36 per cent) believe the next generation of their family will be better off by the time they reach the same age.
- Another third (32 per cent) think the next generation’s financial situation will be the same; the remaining 26 per cent believe their children will be worse off.
- Over half (52 per cent) of those born outside of Canada are optimistic about the next generation’s wealth (52 per cent) versus just a third (33 per cent) of those who were born in Canada.

The ADP Payday Poll was conducted by telephone from August 9 - 15, 2007. The survey is based on a randomly selected sample of 2,006 Canadians ages 18+. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within ± +/-2.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
